The Basics about 2024 Property Tax Refunds for Residential Property Owners Impacted by Recent Hurricanes

Many taxpayers impacted by Hurricane Debby, Helene, or Milton may be eligible for partial 2024 Residential Property Tax Refunds. Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties in the Tampa Bay area are examples of some Florida counties that will reimburse a portion of property tax bills to residential property owners if they meet eligibility criteria. Several jurisdictions in other states impacted by the hurricanes are offering similar tax relief.  

Below is an overview of the Pinellas County, FL, property tax refund program. Many other counties follow a similar refund structure but check with your county’s Property Appraisers Office for specific details.

What is the Property Tax Refund? 

Pinellas County will offer a partial refund for 2024 property tax paid by a residential property owner who can prove that their property became uninhabitable for a minimum of 30 days from the date of the hurricane or other catastrophic event. 

Who is eligible to apply for the disaster relief property tax refund? 

Taxpayers who own a property that becomes uninhabitable for a minimum of 30 days from the date of the hurricane or other catastrophic event. 

What is the application process? 

  1. The owner submits the Application for Catastrophic Event Tax Refund (DR-465/PC-465
  1. The application includes supporting documentation proving the property could not be inhabited after the catastrophic event. 
  1. The application is submitted prior to the filing deadline of March 1, 2025. 
  1. The owner is current on paying all property tax obligations owed to Pinellas County. 

What is the deadline to apply for the refund? 

The completed application and supporting documents must be submitted to the official Pinellas County property appraiser on or before March 1, 2025.  

When will refunds be issued? 

The Pinellas County Property Appraiser’s office cannot begin the refund process until January 2025, but applications may be submitted now. Once started, the process takes a minimum of 4-6 weeks to issue a refund.
